The Poole College of Management Career Center partners with students to provide the foundation to build a lifetime of career success. Through experiential education, strong relationships with the corporate community, resources and coaching, Jenkins MBA students gain the practical experience, confidence and skills to enter the marketplace with a proactive approach and nimble thinking.

 

The Poole College of Management Career Center provides education, resources and coaching around leadership development, job search, and internal career advancement. Our team of career coaches work one-on-one with each MBA student to build an individualized career management plan — assessing strengths and interests, building a brand and developing marketing documents, identifying target industries and employers or entrepreneurial endeavors, networking with advocates, interviewing, and negotiating.

 

The Poole College of Management Career Center establishes and maintains relationships with business partners representing a variety of industries in order to provide the optimal value to employers and MBA students alike.

 

The Poole College of Management Career Center supports approximately 500 graduate students across the Jenkins MBA programs and one-year graduate management degrees.

Meet the Jenkins Career Center Staff

Bev Porter, Director

Bev leads the Career Management Center with an outstanding professional background in top academic and corporate organizations. She has developed a reputation as a results-oriented, creative leader for her team and enjoys working with NC State Jenkins students to help them exceed their career goals. Prior to her time at NC State, she spent a decade in career counseling, program development and delivery, global coaching and corporate relations with another top-ranked MBA program. Bev holds an undergraduate degree in Materials and Logistics Management from Michigan State University and a Masters of Education in Counseling from NC State.

 

Bev is perfectly positioned to lead the Career Management Center and to serve as an advocate for students given her certifications as a Life Coach, Health Coach, Marriage Coach, and Social and Emotional Intelligence Coach.

John Hutchings, Associate Director

For over 20 years John marketed such products as the American Express Card, Kellogg Cereal and Vlasic Pickles, as well as owning his own marketing strategy and planning firm. In 2003, John changed his career direction and chose to help MBAs market themselves. His expertise is assisting MBAs in connecting their work experiences with their business school education in order to achieve their post-MBA career goals. John earned his BBA in marketing from the University of Iowa and an MBA from Columbia Business School.

Caren Howley, Executive Coach

Caren has had a diverse career with experience spanning the corporate, nonprofit and higher education sectors. She began her career in investment banking with Credit Suisse, advising large and mid-cap companies on capital raising and strategic growth opportunities before moving into a leadership position as director of the worldwide financial analyst program.  In 2003, Caren made a strategic shift into nonprofit leadership, where she remained for a decade before entering higher education.  As Associate Director of UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School’s MBA Career Management Center, Caren provided career guidance and individual coaching to MBA students seeking commercial real estate, investment banking and finance-related positions, and she spent another two years leading employer engagement and alumni relations for the Wood Center for Real Estate Studies.  

Caren has her undergraduate degree from Amherst College and an MBA and Masters in Education from Stanford University.

Jane Mehringer, Executive Career Coach

With 18 years of working with talent in multiple industries, Jane Mehringer started her career as an International Radio and Television Society Fellow in New York City and continued to work in television production for several years, most notably for SaturdayNight Live and Sony Pictures. Through her work with interns to executives, she discovered her passion to develop others.

Since then, Jane has expanded her corporate and coaching experience. She worked with an executive search firm before building the global campus recruiting function and program management areas at Credit Suisse and MetLife. Jane identified critical development areas and successively created pertinent human capital initiatives, including mentor and training programs for all experience levels. Through these engagement initiatives, she successfully delivered a top standard of talent identification and significantly increased employee retention rates.

In higher education, Jane served as the Associate Director of Career Services for the Business School at Elon University, advising over 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Currently, Jane works as a part-time Career Coach and Professional Development and Career Planning Course Instructor at NC State's Poole College of Management.

Through pursuing her passion of training and developing others, Jane has obtained essential certifications such as StrengthsFinder, Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), Strategic Workforce Planning and ITIL. Jane's volunteerism includes several executive roles for the North Carolina Association of Colleges and Employers (NCACE) that span over a decade, including President, Conference Co-Chair twice and Professional Development Chair. She currently serves on the Executive Board as the Marketing Liaison for The Invisible Girl Project.

Karen Chontofalsky, Executive Coach

Karen serves the Jenkins Career Center as an executive coach, primarily working with Professional Online MBA students. Prior to working with NC State, she served as a career coach at the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University and also served as the Director of Job Seeker Experience at a multi-local job board called Jobing.com.

Ed Kato, Executive Coach

Ed has more than twenty-five years of experience within the talent acquisition, staffing, recruiting, and human resources environment with additional experience in project management, business management and recruiting management. Much of Ed’s career has been working with clients and candidates matching the two together to help clients grow their businesses and to help candidates grow their careers. Ed has been the co-founder and the founder of four entrepreneurial companies in his career and has worked in the big business corporate environment as well as in the small business environment. His experience includes supporting talent acquisition programs in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, India, and China. 

Ed received his MBA in 2010 from North Carolina State University - Jenkins Graduate School of Management with a concentration in Services Management & Consulting. He received his BS in Business Administration from North Carolina Wesleyan College and he attended Appalachian State University and participated in the Industrial Technology program. Ed is a certified Professional in Human Resources and he is a certified Project Management Professional.

Olivia Hale, Employer Relations and Operations Manager

Olivia is a proud graduate of NC State University and the Poole College of Management. Olivia comes from the fast-paced world of digital advertising where she worked with clients ranging from the food to the healthcare industry. With a background in client services, marketing, and strategy, Olivia is enthusiastic to apply her experiences to best support employers and the Career Management Center.
